Harvest of the Month

City Schoolyard Garden, in partnership with Charlottesville City Schools, and many others, is hosting another year of Harvest of the Month: Garden to Table Snack Program for the 2018-2019 school year! This program gives youth in Charlottesville City Schools a great way to explore, taste, and learn about seasonal vegetables and fruits — from the garden, in the classroom, on the plate.  The Harvest of the Month Program highlights a locally available crop each month by providing a fresh, healthy snack to students’ classrooms and lunchrooms. The program runs each month to all Charlottesville City School students Pre-K through 12th grade. With your help, we’re able make programs a permanent mainstay of Charlottesville City Schools.

Backpack Flyer Lesson

The morning of the Harvest of the Month snack, there is a trivia question put forth to elementary school students, to encourage them to think creatively and investigate the month’s featured crop.  In addition to the trivia and tastings in the cafeteria, students will learn about the crop in their City Schoolyard Garden and classroom through cross-curricular lessons and information on growing, nutrition, and preparation. Then, students are given information to take home that includes a recipe with the Harvest of the Month crop, growing information and more (in English and Spanish). Check out the resources developed as each month’s crop is revealed and join us in celebrating and enjoying our foods.

Thank you to rock paper scissors for working with CSG on the new Harvest of the Month backpack flyer design. And another thanks to Charlottesville City Schools for providing the Spanish translation!

Thanks to our generous partners and donors that are making Harvest of the Month possible.
