A Successful Celebration

by Jeanette Abi-Nader

At the heart of City Schoolyard Garden are the youth who work every day in the gardens, growing fresh food, caring for the chickens, and cultivating their own leadership, team work and healthy living skills. What keeps this heart beating?

Behind our on the ground programs is an interconnected network of partners, sponsors, and supporters providing the foundational resources for this work to happen. This month CSG celebrated with many of those partners at our first ever Winter Wonderland event on the very last day of winter. Hosted by CSG Board member, Kimberlee Daniels, we gathered in a beautiful wintery scene with new and long-time supporters to tell the story of youth growing.

“The garden provided a place that was kind of like home to me. A place where I knew I could go back to if I needed. For me that was very important and why I’ve stayed with CSG for so long, because it’s like a family.” – Manuka, Youth Food Justice Intern

Kim brought together an amazing network of health professionals who care deeply about youth and community health. Angela Taylor is with Magellan Health, the major sponsor for Winter Wonderland, and shared the following:

“The work that City Schoolyard Garden is doing for the City of Charlottesville is amazing and we are very honored to be able to help support their mission as it closely aligns with ours. At Magellan Complete Care of Virginia, our mission is to lead Virginians to live health, vibrant lives and understand it starts with our youth. We believe that if we teach children healthy habits early in life it will continue throughout adulthood.”

As staff and interns who often show up with dirt under our nails, it was fun to dress up and spend an evening with Charlottesville folks who share a commitment to creating healthy systems for youth in our community.

We came within $5,000 of reaching our fundraising goal to finish out this spring season. If you’d like to help us make it to $25,000, you have another week to donate towards our Winter Wonderland campaign here.
