Charlottesville Food Justice Network Launches New Website!

Over the past months, partners in Charlottesville Food Justice Network, a program of City Schoolyard Garden, have been working tirelessly to strategize around building a food secure city for all our citizens, as well as create a communication plan to show our work and engage the wider public. We’re pleased to announce that one way our efforts are materializing is with the launch of our new website where you will find resources on our strategy, views, and learning materials such as white papers, equity frameworks, and presentations. Members of the Charlottesville Food Justice Network are continually collaborating to assess and envision pathways to creating a food secure city through a systems approach. To this end, we are rolling out sectorial perspectives on food justice and equity among the faith based community, within the school system, across community health resources, as well as throughout transportation systems and within the redevelopment process. Please stay tuned for these updates as they occur in the coming weeks!

Lastly, one large undertaking by the Food Justice Network moving forward is working with the city throughout the comprehensive planning process. We hope to use the website as a way to not only communicate out key messages on this front, but also to garner support for building a healthy and just local food system. Currently,  the City’s 5 year Comprehensive Plan does not include strategies for expanding food access and ending hunger, a prevalent problem. Nor have past plans included this perspective, potentially exacerbating current conditions of food insurity in our city (1 in 6 families face hunger and food insecurity in Charlottesville). Save the Date for a CFJN conference call on Thursday, May 3rd from 4:30-6:00pm to discuss how you can actively influence the City’s Comprehensive Plan to include food equity. Sign up for our group list cvillefoodjustice@googlegroups.com by contacting Shantell Bingham at shantell@cityschoolyardgarden.org.

Partners in the CFJN, are here and ready to support the city in creating a new chapter dedicated to food access and alleviating hunger, which we feel is urgent in order to achieve healthier schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods for all citizens no matter their race/ethnicity, nationality, gender, religion, neighborhood or zip code. We believe that we can transform our city’s food system for the better. If you stand in support of building a food secure city, please join the Charlottesville Food Justice Network by adding your name to our Call for Action and signing up for our list serve.
