First Peas First!–First Peas to the Table Celebration

We had a very exciting, morning on Wednesday celebrating a first for City Schoolyard Garden. For the first time we had two winners during the First Peas to the Table competition!

First Peas to the Table is a friendly competition between the six elementary schools inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s competition that he had with his neighbors. With Thomas Jefferson’s version whoever could harvest the first bowl of peas had to host the rest of the competing farmers for dinner. In ours, the three largest peas from each school were picked and measured (the length and width were added by the first graders for one total) on May 26, 2017. After much anticipation and regular updates, we were very excited to get the final results of the First Peas measurements. We were given the final results the same day.

First-time winner Burnley-Moran Elementary and second-time winner Jackson-Via Elementary tied for first with a 3-pea measurement of 10.5”! Those are some big peas! Today was the day that we had the ceremony at both winners’ schools.

In the morning we visited the first graders at Burnley-Moran, where Jeanette Abi-Nader, CSG Executive Director, presented the first graders with an engraved Jefferson Cup announcing them as the the 2017 First Peas to the Table winners! All of the kids and teachers were excited to be out in the garden, and eating their snack–which was obviously Sugar Snap Peas. One teacher said”I’ve been waiting for this for 5 years!” Mr. Matt, the Burnley-Moran Garden Coordinator even surprised the first grade teachers and Principle Locasale, while getting a picture taken by dumping a water cooler full of peas on their heads! The kids obviously roared with laughter to see their teachers covered in peas.

From Burnley-Moran, we headed to Jackson-Via, to provide them with their second Jefferson Cup for the First Peas to the Table competition. Jackson-Via won back in 2014 as well. Aleen Carey, CSG Board Chair presented their Jefferson cup to them. We had a great time talking about the peas that were grown in their garden and eating all the Sugar Snap Peas as well. We also had a very interesting conversation about favorite vegetables that they can grow.

Below are some fantastic pictures of the first graders enjoying the fruits of their labor! (photos courtesy of Dan Hennicke, Charlottesville Tomorrow)
