October 2016 Harvest of the Month: Green Beans

On Thursday, October 6, 2016, students attending Charlottesville City Schools celebrated Harvest of the Month by tasting roasted green beans, sourced locally from Hill Farm in Louisa County, Hartland Natural Farm in Madison County, Sunflower Flats in Rockbridge County, and C&E Farms on the Eastern Shore. From farm to table, the green beans were handled with great care and love.  With the backdrop of music and exited chatter, thirteen volunteers came together and worked diligently in the Central Kitchen at Charlottesville High School to wash and pick the ends off of 220 lbs of green beans.  Many of the volunteers included people who were interested in public health and wanted to get a glimpse of what running a program like Harvest of the Month involved. The sight of the volunteers working around two large counters elicited the thought of simpler times when people came together to cook, converse, and build relationships.

The kids loved the green beans, and some 3rd graders at Burnley-Moran even said they preferred the green beans with less seasoning.  Look at these happy kids!  Believe it or not, vegetables can taste amazing!
