April Harvest of the Month: Salad Turnips

Today was April’s Harvest of the Month. A little later than usual due to Spring Break, we brought snacks to each elementary school for the students to try. This month’s spotlight crop? Salad turnips, a sweeter, crispier variety of the beloved turnips. Usually served raw, the turnips are sweet, mild and juicy.

Yesterday, 8 volunteers worked alongside 3 Central Kitchen staffers to wash and cut the salad turnips. While a little background music played, everybody was focused and worked together like a well-oiled machine.

Calea Sholes, a 7th grader at Buford Middle School, painted this month’s beautiful artwork.  She worked hard to create the image that is seen all throughout the Charlottesville City School system.  Great job Calea!

Today, more volunteers delivered the snack to each school and distributed the snacks to the teachers and students.

Check out these photos from Clark Elementary.  Apparently, there were mixed reviews.

Here’s a sampling of quotes overheard at Jackson-Via Elementary, from well-spoken students:

“I think it’s very good.”

“Not very flavorful.”

“Can’t you just make more we can take home! I wanna take some home!”

“Needs some salt and pepper.”

“It tastes like a radish but a little sweeter and not as spicy.”

“It’s so spicy!”

“I think it tastes like a liiiiiittle bit of broccoli.”

As you can see, each student experienced the snack in their own unique way.  It’s so much fun to hear what they think!

As always, we want to give a great big thanks to our volunteers, kitchen crews, Garden Coordinators, teachers, Local Food Hub, the folks at rock, paper, scissors who designed the poster and flyer, student writers and artists at Buford, the farmers, and the people who harvested the seeds from which those tasty turnips sprouted.  Harvest of the Month brings a delicious seasonal snack to students at Charlottesville City Schools and is made possible through many helping hands. Thank you all!
